Australians in Second Life Update – down again

January 18, 2008 by Metaverse Journal Editor Leave a Comment

Second Life metrics to the end of December are now available and from an Australian perspective there’s been a significant drop in active users – 10,644 is the number cited, down from 11,982 in November and a long way under the fifteen thousand of mid-2007.

Australia maintains its position as 11th in terms of worldwide active users. Given there’s record concurrency (number of users online at the one time), why the sustained drop off in numbers?

Well, I know one of my 10 alts was deleted by the Lindens because I never took him out of orientation Island. Another I deleted myself. So I guess I account for 2 of the drop.

Also, if you owe money, even L$1 and dont pay for 30 days you are deleted.

I foresee that Australians will be down to the mid 9,000’s next quarter.

Rather disappointing results.. I’d certainly love to see the numbers increase and a viable market to work with.. I think the clincher is that there is really very little to do to keep people coming back for more, outside of the university sphere. And marketing and starting off ventures takes lots of time and patience within SL and ultimately is not worth the cost, until, things improve 😉
