Casinos in SL – the beginning of the end?

April 6, 2007 by Metaverse Journal Editor 2 Comments

According to the Official Linden Blog, restriction are being put in place to prevent advertising of simulated gambling i.e. casinos.

The response from users is mixed as always. A number make a fairly safe prediction – that gambling will just become more subtle and/or involve links to external websites. A number of others are jubilant that their lag issues on mainland sims is likely to reduce. What are your thoughts?

Fact is most large casino’s are on private islands. Fact is mainland casino’s are rather small in comparision and provide just as much lag if not less then those at a club on mainland. Scripts from a casino contribute to lag but are not all to blame for lag (server lag). Using high rez textures on a home can contribute more lag (client or computer lag) making it more noticable to the user then scripts. Using AO’s on yourself and multiplying that by everyone that’s at a place in SL can contribute to lag.

Bottom line is casino’s are not all to blame for mainland lag.

Stick 40 prim heavy script heavy avi’s in a class 5 sim with nonthing in it.. no buildings no textures no casinos/clubs and tell me you dont experience lag. My guess is you will.

And no… not all casino’s go camp crazy with 20+ camping chairs and 20+ zombies. 🙂
